This small restaurant and coffee shop, which holds only a few tables and is located in the Dogpatch region, is a wonderful find. It is perfect for early risers, as it opens early in the morning every day (7:00 am to 2:00 pm on Monday and Tuesday, 7:00 am to 8:00 pm Wednesday to Friday, and 7:30 am to 8:00 pm on the weekend). Thus, it has become one of my favorite places to grab a quick breakfast when I am in the area. But it’s also worth a try later in the day if you’re nearby. 

Bandit has a nice assortment of coffee and espresso beverages. Made in front of you with their state-of-the-art coffee machines, syrups, and fresh milk, the beverages have a nice, strong coffee flavor that—like the caffeine level—is powerful but not overpowering. It will wake you up but not leave you overly buzzed, just as much as it will taste a bit bitter but not taste bad.

Bandit serves some nice breakfast items like breakfast sandwiches and breakfast burritos, all thick with generous portions, but their entire menu, including their lunch sandwiches and burgers, is also available all day. I like to get their cheeseburger, which is made with quality ingredients; American Kobe beef and Tillamook cheddar cheese make it memorable enough you'll want another one. You can order a side of fries or tater tots with any sandwich or burrito, which will come with free ketchup and really complete the meal.

The service is lightning quick. You place your order and then the magic happens! The baristas and cooks work fast and make a consistently desirable product every time. The prices are relatively low, and the food and drink options taste wonderful. You’ll be in and out faster than you’d expect, having paid less than you’d expect for such a satisfying, large meal. It’s tasty, affordable, and oh so quick! I know I'll be back for more.

Gusto: Berkeley's HOT new Algerian restaurant!

'   Gusto In my opinion, this might be the most exciting new restaurant in Berkeley right now! The stripped-down, casual setup allows the real focus to be on the food and company. It’s the first Algerian restaurant I have tried in the area, and it pulls off a menu of Algerian flavors with real gusto (pun intended)! You order and pay at the counter or kiosk up front. The menu is short and to the point, and the kitchen works relatively fast, churning out beautiful, delicious Mediterranean (Algerian) dishes in a jiffy. While you wait, you might want to sip one of their Algerian sodas from the cooler; my favorite is the carbonated lemonade.
