Marugame Udon

Gyudon and Gyoza

 Marugame Udon

Marugame Udon is a restaurant that provides hungry people who are craving a flavorful, hearty Japanese meal instant gratification! With several locations in the Bay Area, inclding one in Berkeley, Palo Alto, and San Francisco, Marugame Udon is a wonderful chain that serves satisfying Japanese food. The menu includes several different flavors of udon, rice bowls, and tempura. All of these dishes are assembled on the spot behind the counter when you order them.

It is a restaurant where you place your order at the counter, and the food is ready to be plated as soon as you order. Once you order, you can watch them prepare your meal right there (the ingredients are ready and freshly prepared in house). You can pick out your side dishes: tempura, gyoza, or other fried options that really compliment the dishes. Of all the options, my favorite is the gyoza, which are perfectly crispy and packed with flavor.

After you've placed and customized your order, you will pay at the counter. The prices are not particularly daunting, and the staff are very honest and will not overcharge you. Once you've paid, you can get some free chopsticks and water and take a seat anywhere you want in the spacious restaurant. It's a great place spread out and spend time with friend and family.

The food here isn't just delicious; it's also beautiful. Each dish comes carefully plated on beautiful bowls and artistic dark trays. Even though it's not particularly fancy, the restaurant makes a real effort to make aesthetically pleasing, appetizing dishes.

As the name suggests, this restaurant makes great udon. The udon here is a savory and satiating meal with salty and umami notes that hit hard as Japanese comfort food. The warm broth and slurpy, chewy noodles are a fan-favorite; the udon noodles are famously homemade in the kitchen, and you can really taste the freshness.

The chicken katsu bowls are also a safe and popular choice. The crunchy, panko breaded chicken pairs well with either teriyaki or curry sauce over rice.

And yet, for me, my favorite remains the gyudon beef bowl (pictured above). The meat is tender and flavorful. The sauce is sweet but salty and savory. It goes well with the simple but well-prepared rice. The optional scallions and tempura flakes add the perfect amount of crunch and kick. I find it almost irresistible!

In the end, it's a great place to try. It has great prices, a great environment, and best of all, great food!
