Hella Bagels
Hella Bagels
Hella Bagels is a small cafe in Albany that rolls, boils, and bakes fresh bagels in-house each day they’re open. You can taste the freshness in the chewy, buttery bite of the bagel. The bagels are buttery on the outside, dense and chewy on the inside, and very appetizing as a whole. The entire cafe smells like fresh-baked bagels!
Like other cafes, they also serve coffee, espresso beverages, and salads. However, this shop specializes in fresh bagels, fresh bagels with spreads, and fresh bagel sandwiches.
They offer seven types of bagels, including plain, everything, onion, garlic, salt, sesame, and poppy, as well as eleven types of spread, such as butter, berries and cream, spicy mango peach, veggie, Nova Lox, garlic confit, jalapeño cilantro, chili crisp, and horseradish lemon dill. They are not skimpy with the amount of spread! A fresh-baked bagel is only $3, and a fresh-baked bagel with spread is only $5 here!
They have smoked fish, vegetable, fruit, and egg sandwiches as well, all served on their freshly baked bagels. These more elaborate ensembles end up costing more, but they are made with great care and complex, interesting ingredients. These sandwiches can be customized with various add-ons, like tomato, Nova Lox, and bacon.
It’s not a particularly large café; it has a small indoor eating area and a small patio that juts out into a quiet parking lot nearby. You can see the area where the bagels are baked and where bagel sandwiches are prepared according to the orders placed. You can hear the sizzling and clanking of the kitchen with the music on the speakers and the traffic of San Pablo.
Although it’s small, it attracts a loyal clientele who circulate in and out in the mornings. It’s the kind of place adults can peacefully sit and work (free wifi is provided), but it’s also a place people like to bring their children because it’s tasty and cute.
The staff here are pleasant and kind to everyone. It’s a welcoming environment for all, and you will notice they have posters promoting social justice and condemning ICE.
There’s only a few people working at the cash register and the kitchen at a time, but the work is done quickly and efficiently. The wait time seems to be on average 5-10 minutes, and the orders are fulfilled with great accuracy and attention to detail.
