Burma Spice: Tasty Burmese food in Redwood City
Burma Spice
Burma Spice is an attractive full-service sit-down restaurant in Redwood City that serves delightful, artistic, and tasty Burmese dishes at reasonable prices. The servers here know the menu and perform their duties with the type of natural ease that comes with experience, and the chefs work quickly and carefully to make aesthetically pleasing and tasty dishes without overcooking the meat, using too much sauce, or adding too much of any one flavor. The result is a dining experience that is completely satisfying. The food is—without fail—something you will enjoy eating, your water cup seems to fill itself automatically, and the eating area is quiet and clean. All this makes it the ideal place to eat with people you really want to spend time with—it’s a comfortable and enjoyable place to relax together, and the food, which is cooked perfectly, only adds to your enjoyment.
Although Burma Spice serves a specific type of cuisine, Burmese cuisine, and it is decorated with some very attractive Burmese artwork, the truth is that it has a very versatile appeal that makes it a great place to meet with other people for a variety of reasons. It’s large, spacious, clean, and inviting with plenty of privacy. The seats are comfortable and not too close to the other tables. There’s something for everyone on the menu, even for people who are vegetarian, gluten sensitive, or don’t like spice. The food comes quickly, as the experienced waiters work in perfect harmony with the expert chefs. You might hear the radio playing softly or see a sporting event on the television, but here your attention is mostly split between the taste of the food and the company.
The menu has an impressive number of elaborate dishes. Whether you prefer noodles, salads, soups, chicken, seafood, lamb, beef, or vegetarian options, you will find that you are offered plenty of options to choose from. Watch for the green symbol on the menu next to an item that denotes that it’s gluten-free. The menu doesn’t just list dishes; it describes them in fascinating detail so that you get a really good idea of what you’re ordering. It’s hard to go wrong here; the chefs know how to cook expertly with Burmese flavors, so everything comes perfectly cooked and spiced. If you come with friends, it’s a great place to order more than one of these interesting plates for the table to share.
The food here had me dreaming of traveling to Burma. As someone who has very little experience with Burmese cuisine, I found this food to be extremely interesting. The balance between markedly different flavors (sweet, spicy, tangy, and herby) and textures (crunchy, sticky, and soft) was both very enjoyable and very fascinating. Because I had no way of getting all the way to Burma at the moment, I had to make do with a small glimpse of the culture through the decorations in the restaurant to inform my notions of what that trip might be like.
The basil lemongrass chicken has a bright and herby flavor. The chicken is cooked until it is tender and is doused with a salty and umami sauce. Then it’s tossed with fresh and crunchy pea pods and bell pepper slices that really add to this meal’s simple yet sophisticated appeal.
But if you’re only going to order one thing, I’d suggest the sesame beef! It comes in bite-sized pieces, battered in a slightly crispy fried exterior, and cooked perfectly to a tender but not rare texture. It’s tossed in a thick, umami, and sweet but tangy syrupy glaze and topped with sesame seeds. The finished product is something that I will not soon forget. It’s savory, complex, and very filling.
The food here will excite your taste buds, so a nice, soft and savory but slightly bland serving of rice makes an excellent side dish to balance everything out. The rice is served in a small bowl, which is a thoughtful portion size, just big enough to accompany your meal and not overpower it and just inexpensive enough that it won’t blow your eating out budget. It makes a nice touch, and you can decide what type of rice you prefer by reading the menu. In our case, we went with the brown rice and didn’t regret it.
You also could examine the drink menu, which offers tea, soda, and lemonade as some of the nonalcoholic options and a long list of alcoholic beverages for the over age 21 crowd. The prices vary by beverage, but the nonalcoholic drinks were all rather affordable. I personally don’t like to drink, but I imagine a place like this would be a nice place to enjoy a drink with some friends or family. I say that because it’s a very relaxed and enjoyable environment with lots of privacy and space.
Overall, I am so glad I found this amazing restaurant. It’s so tasty and enjoyable that I am already thinking of an excuse to come back. It’s a very specialized cuisine that is made so masterfully that it gains universal appeal. Burma Spice is certainly a place I recommend you go for good food and conversation. It’s an impressive place to eat!
